This year, 70 people joined us for our annual ice cream social - the introductory event for our chapter to introduce the club to new and returning members. The festivities started with an epic competition of Rock Paper Scissors and got more competitive with a game of telephone charades, where members acted out an action. Later, members were separated into their houses of "Caecilius," "Cerberus," "Quintus," and "Grumio." Finally, ice cream (the best part!) was served and consumed while the executive board introduced themselves and presented a powerpoint discussing the joys of the JCL and upcoming events.
BREAKOUT BOX (8/27/19)
The Break Out Box event was meant to be an introduction to Certamen, but not a Certamen practice. It was a chance for members to learn more about the topics in the world’s greatest sport while munching on pizza, as well as a fun competitive event for further member bonding. Members were given a packet of questions and tasked with answering questions about the language, history and culture, mythology, and literature of the Roman people with the ability to use resources such as the internet and books. The winning team won the much-contended prize of several Chick fil-A gift cards. The questions were written by our Certamen & Academics Chair, Shirley Hong.

Meals on Wheels is an organization that provides meals to low-income and homebound seniors that cannot afford nutritious food by directly bringing meals to their household. For our September service project, the NGJCL decorated lunch bags to put this food in while bonding as a chapter with the hopes of improving the experience of Meals on Wheels meal recipients. Approximately 80 paper bags were embellished for the nonprofit organization.
trivia "night" (10/1/19)
Trivia night was a fun competitive event where delegates got into groups of four to test their Latin and pop culture knowledge. After hearing the question, people would discuss in their groups and choose to award a certain number of points to each answer. They would then deliver their written answer to the judges, and the judges would award points based on correctness. Winners were awarded candy.

trunk or treat (10/23/19)
Trunk or Treat is an annual North Gwinnett event where clubs gather in the senior parking lot with cars, costumes, and decorations to serve as a prequel to Halloween. Kids in the Suwanee area can enjoy trick-or-treating with their favorite high school clubs! Our booth attracted lots of popularity from children because we offered corn hole and gladiatorial combat in addition to candy. Children truly got to be a Roman for Halloween!

North Gwinnett brought roughly 36 delegates to Wheeler High School this year for Fall Forum, a statewide event that promotes Latin knowledge in academic testing, Certamen, and workshops which enable you to make lifelong connections through interacting with people from other schools. There are also opportunities to win awards in creative arts contests, like sight-reading and composition. In addition, there are also non-Latin activities such as graphics art contests and Ludi/Olympika, in which JCLers either compete solo in events like races, or compete in a team like in ultimate frisbee. This year, NGJCL showed our spirit by cheering first at first GA!
chapter dinner (11/13/19)
French met her father at the NGJCL’s annual chapter dinner. This year, it was hosted at La Madeleine’s and served as our chapter's "Friendsgiving." We had a very cute photo booth with the theme of “Party Like it’s 753 BCE!” and chapter members invited family and friends that weren’t in Latin Club as well. The food was very good and hearty, and everyone in attendance took advantage of the free bread bar and blackberry jam. We ended the night with an epic game of Llamas Unleashed.

eastside tourney
(11/16/19)
The first Certamen tournament of the year at Eastside High School was not a disappointment for the NGJCL. The biweekly practices paid off big time when North Gwinnett claimed first in all three levels - novice, intermediate, and advanced. Our novice team consisted of one man, who made his presence known through answering questions of all topics on his own. The only thing faster than the buzzing of the Intermediate team was the regurgitation of their knowledge, remaining in first place throughout the whole tournament. The advanced team utilized specialization to answer questions, but their opponents were very talented. We went home with three really snazzy plaques and a determination to study more. Lunch was also delicious with very fitting Little Caesar’s pizza being served.
eastside CELEBRATION
(11/22/19)
To celebrate our very successful time at the Eastside Certamen Tournament, the entire team agreed to celebrate their victories by having a food party. Everyone brought a variety of foods, from chips to cheesecake, and enjoyed socializing as we reminisced Certamen and JCL memories from the past. Partiers went home for the Thanksgiving break with a full stomach.
OP. CHRISTMAS CHILD SERVICE PROJECT (11/19/19)
Operation Christmas Child is an international nonprofit project by the organization Samaritan’s Purse that delivers items and toys in shoeboxes to children in need around the world. The kids that receive the shoebox have often never gotten a Christmas gift before. For our November service project, the NGJCL got to act as a personal Santa Claus for these kids by packing items such as toothbrushes, toys, and pencils, all the while spreading the Christmas spirit among ourselves as well. We collected these items from a weeklong drive.

Saturnalia was the festival that honored the Roman god, Saturn, with feasting, gift giving, and merry activities in general. This year, for NGJCL's annual celebration, we got together and ate good food, played cards, socialized, played an unwrapping-gift-game, participated in White Elephant, and had our annual pie-eating contest. Kaya, our reigning champion, valiantly defeated her competitor, Michael, to prove her superiority in finishing an apple pie the quickest.
HAPPY HOT CHOCOLATE SERVICE PROJ. (1/22/20)
Georgia was very cold during this week, but the teachers at North Gwinnett were not. We prepared hot chocolate packets, peppermints, and lots of marshmallows to pack into paper coffee mugs. Most heartwarming of all, however, were the notes and drawings that the NGJCLers wrote for their teachers. We put these notes into the cups with the hot chocolates and delivered them to teachers. We also made some cups for the unsung heroes and put hot chocolate cups into random teacher lockers as a surprise!

We may not all be Elsas, but that doesn’t stop the NGJCL from having a nICE time! JCLers met at a local ice skating rink to skate, an annual North tradition, and we all CHILLed from the stress of school. It was definitely COOL to see some new faces, and no one was ICE-olated, especially since our upperclassmen offered to carpool.
LUPERCALIA CERTAMEN TOURNEY (2/8/20)
We brought three Certamen teams to Walton High School, and after an eventful first round, we were notified that the tournament was canceled, due to the heavy snow. Though we were extremely disappointed, we made the most of the situation and bonded over playing games and watching Ford vs. Ferrari.
DOG TOY SERVICE PROJECT (2/12/20)
A tradition of the NGJCL high school, we showed our favorite dog toy video and cut up old t-shirts to braid together to make colorful dog toys to donate to our local animal shelter. We blasted the NGJCL Officer Playlist on Spotify while making the snazzy dog toys. Some were pretty, and some definitely weren’t, but we all got some good upper/underclassmen moments while making them. Overall, we made about 80 dog toys out of t-shirts.

NGJCL hosted the first Lupercalia at Sims Lake Park and invited a ton of schools across the state. The purpose was not only to make new friends from different schools but also to introduce the true spirit of the JCL to our new members: making lifelong connections with people. We centered the event around field activities, such as cornhole and ultimate. We also had a successful round of food relay, in which delegates got into teams and competed to see which team could finish the designated food items the quickest. Afterward, we hosted a scavenger hunt around the park that tested difficult Latin facts, and followed that with pop culture trivia.
CAESARS VS. SENATORS (3/9/20 - 3/12/20)
All of the friendship and trust that NGJCL members flex about? ALL. A. LIE. Caesars vs. Senators revealed all of the betrayals that friends can commit among themselves. But is that really a surprise when a $5 Amazon Gift Card, Latinitas Points, and extra points on a Latin test are awarded to the winner? Caesars vs. Senators is an assassin/humans v. zombies style game played in school where each player is assigned a "proscription" or the name of the person they must tag and an armband. During transitions and lunch, players must mark the armband of their target. The marked target is then out of the game, and the assassin gets their target's proscription. The game continues until only one person is left. The winner this year was Sydney Feng, our very own NGJCL secretary. Very high stakes!
