ICE CREAM SOCIAL (8/21/20)

The annual ice cream social was taken place online via Zoom to accommodate the current world events. As a first in the order of events, introduction to Latin club and new officers took place as usual. The most exciting parts, ice cream and games, took a different approach this year. Some ingredients were delivered to members beforehand, and everyone got to make their own ice cream to share virtually! After making some ice cream to chat over, breakout rooms were made to play Skribbl.io, have a good time guessing each other's drawings, and meet some new people. Overall, it was an interesting approach to a traditional event.

Dog toys service project (9/18/20)

One of NGJCL's tradition is having a dog toys service project in the beginning of the school year. To accommodate the current situation, this year's project was held over Zoom call after class. Members watched a short instruction video and made dog toys while catching up with other members. After the service project was over, our second vice president Colin Hunsaker picked up dog toys made from members to donate to an animal shelter.

FALL FORUM (10/17/20)

GJCL's annual Fall Forum went online on October 17th. Even though it was online, the JCL spirit was high at General Assemblies. Many events were ran online through Zoom, some of which included yoga, open certamen, chariot, and art viewing. Service project of the year, Love Link, was also went online. JCLers gathered on Zoom to make paper links with positive messages and chat. There were also some games - mafia, scavenger hunt, Among Us, and Skibble - where JCLers competed against each other to win the game. And of course, classic game certamen went on, and NGJCL's own advanced team (Sarah Park, Shirley Hong, Albert Doan, Sydney Feng, and Anand Krishnan) took 1st place! Although it was sad to not have this event in person, it was still a great to interact with GJCLers.

trivia (10/23/20)

Trivia (afternoon?) was held over the Zoom; this time, the members were split into 3 teams to compete for the Latinitas points. The categories included NGJCL related subjects and pop culture references, and the format of the game was interesting - each team got a Google Doc to use as a discussion space. Although there were some issues with internet on host side, it was still a fun event.

virtual Halloween
(10/26/20 - 11/1/20)

NGJCL website went through a seasonal change for the first time to celebrate Halloween - virtually! Entire website was decorated with spooky sprites (hand drawn by webmaster!) and different officer photos. The event activities consisted of multiple "friendly ghost"  trivia forms, "tricky ghost" leading to strange websites, and scavenger hunt, which were all hidden in the sprites. To add onto this, some Easter eggs were hidden for the members to find. Even though it was a different approach to the classic spooky season, NGJCLers had a great time.

Letters to soldiers (11/13/20)

NGJCLers gathered on Zoom to write letters to soldiers overseas. The letters were all in holiday theme, thanking the soldiers for their service. Colorful cards made during the project were picked up by our 2nd vice president to be sent.

Dinner (11/20/20)

NGJCL's annual dinner was hosted on Zoom to start off the Thanksgiving break.  To begin the dinner, officer cooking vlog (edited by our secretary) was shown. Members dropped by with (or without) their dinner to chat and just have fun on Zoom call. After chatting about foods for some time, a heated debate on pickles began and went on for an hour (which continued in our Discord server afterwards). Overall, it was a great way for many members to relax after stressful school works.

saturnalia (12/18/20)

NGJCLers gathered on Zoom to celebrate annual Saturnalia right after finals. As everyone chatted and played Skribbl.io and Among Us (unfortunately do not have photos), members got a chance to de-stress after the  finals and unusual first semester. Some games of Skribbl.io featured rather unusual words (and phrases), including script of Bee Movie, random classics related words, and a whole lot of therapy. Overall, it was a great wrap up to a rather strange year of club events.

virtual Christmas
(12/23/20 - 1/3/21)

NGJCL website's second virtual event happened during the holiday season. Just like the last time, all the pages were decorated with Christmas ornaments or related objects, and trivia forms and Easter eggs were hidden in them. One page was dedicated for NGJCL's pickle debate (with Santa pickles, which became Discord emote). Like usual, all the officer photos were also changed to holiday/winter theme, with the exception two people. Overall, it was another successful online event for this past strange year end season.

kits for homeless (1/29/21)

First service project started by making kits for homeless. Members gathered with old t-shirts to make bags out of them and stuffing them with snacks and hygiene items to donate to homeless. Since it had been around a month since the last NGJCL event, members also got a time to catch up with each other regarding life events, college admissions, and other things. Overall, it was a good kickstart for the second semester.

lupercalia (2/19/21)

NGJCL's annual Lupercalia was hosted over the Zoom! This event was open to anyone, including non-JCLers, non-NGJCLers, and middle schoolers, to have just have fun. All the participants split up into 3 groups of their choice to play Codenames, trivia, or Skribbl. From guessing words from strange pictures to clues, everyone had a fun time playing games with some familiar (and unfamiliar) faces.

ides of march tournament
(3/20/21)

The Ides of March certamen tournament was hosted by North Gwinnett JCL over Zoom (for the first time in 4 years). Nine schools and 18 teams competed in total, despite it going online on a Saturday morning. NGJCL members volunteered as scorekeepers, timekeepers, filler team members, or even as readers, adjusting to the unusual format of the tournament. The tournament itself went very smoothly without any major technical difficulties (thanks to our president). JCLers from all over the state enjoyed meeting other players from the schools and continued on the competitive spirits of certamen.

officer training
(4/2/21)

NGJCL held an annual officer training session to present the officer roles to the members interested in running or applying for an officer position in the future. The presentation consisted of each officer going over the duties and other important tips/qualifications and Q & A session for each position. This gave members to ask about specifics of the positions and get clarifications regarding candidacy. This also brought some attentions to the positions that got overlooked in the past. Overall, it was an essential and informative session for anyone looking to run or apply for an officer position in the future.

sims park service project (4/16/21)

NGJCLers gathered at Sims Park to do a service scavenger hunt on a sunny Friday afternoon. The scavenger hunt challenge, planned by our 2nd vice president Colin, included things like giving a flower to a stranger, making a birdfeeder, wiping tables, and writing inspirational things with chalks. Members split up into groups to perform these acts of services and enjoyed the first in-person event of the year, meeting the people who they may have only seen on Zoom. It was a meaningful day of service and social event in one.

state convention
(4/17/21 & 4/24/21)

GJCL's state convention went online to accommodate for the current circumstances over the two weeks. Even though it was unfortunate that we did not get to be at the Rock Eagle, our JCL spirit was still present over the virtual settings. The heated art contests, tests, and certamen went on, reviving the competitive spirit of JCL. GJCLers still enjoyed workshops, dog toy service project, and social events like Among Us and Mafia and had a great time interacting with others from all over Georgia.

senior goodbyes (4/24/21)

NGJCL's tradition of hosting a senior goodbye session on the final day of state convention managed to continue in a slightly different way. Some seniors were able to gather at our secretary Madeline Busse's house to do an in-person session with the Zoom session for everyone else happening simultaneously. Underclassmen each got a chance to say goodbyes to the seniors first, followed by seniors to the underclassmen. Before seniors to seniors goodbyes started, Mr. Rhilinger also had short words to each of the seniors present. And at last, the long awaited seniors to seniors goodbye went on for hours until everyone finished at midnight. For seniors, this was one of the most memorable night of their time in JCL.

end of year celebration
(5/16/21)

NGJCL's webmaster prepared an end of year celebration/senior celebration on the website! This was mainly to celebrate the seniors who had a rather strange year. This event included senior spotlight (senior pictures + quote), notes to seniors (from fellow NGJCL members), '20-'21 officer letters, and a playlist (curated by some NGJCLers and webmaster). This was also the final big project of this year's webmaster (that took almost a month). Overall, it was a great way to wrap up the strange year and celebrate all the seniors of NGJCL.

AWARDS CEREMONY (5/21/21)

Despite all the strange events of the year, NGJCL hosted the awards ceremony to wrap up the year. As usual, the awards began with new officer introductions and went on to announce all the achievements that NGJCLers made in Latin this year. It was impressionable that even with the pandemic, many NGJCLers participated in exams and competitions, receiving awards for many of them. Along with traditional exam awards, letters/bars and senior superlatives (voted by members) were announced. After all the awards, members headed to photo booth and the stage to take photos with each other for the last time this year. This marked the end of '20-'21 NGJCL. Thank you for a great year, NGJCL!
